A purchase can be completed in a few seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n

We choose a product, pay and continue on our way. From a functional point of view, everything has gone as it should. A need has found an answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

But when we shop in a physical store, something else can happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two people meet.<\/span><\/p>\n

One welcomes the other, listens to what they are looking for, answers a question, offers a recommendation or exchanges a few words that may not have been planned. The commercial transaction is still there, but for a few moments it no longer occupies the whole space.<\/span><\/p>\n

An encounter takes place.<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>The Village Effect<\/span><\/i>, psychologist Susan Pinker develops a particularly thought-provoking idea: our lives are not sustained only by our closest emotional bonds. Less intimate but repeated face-to-face contacts also matter\u2014the people we come across, speak to and recognise in our everyday lives. Together, these relationships form a kind of personal village around each of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

The village Pinker describes is not necessarily a geographical place.<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not require us to return to a rural community or give up technology. It can include family and friends, but also neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances and people with whom we have brief, recurring exchanges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among them, very often, is the person who serves us in the shops we regularly visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The encounter begins when presence becomes attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not enough for two people simply to be in the same place. One must truly notice the existence of the other. Look up. Listen. Respond in a way that could not have been addressed indiscriminately to anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that moment, we cease to be merely functions.<\/span><\/p>\n

One person is no longer only the seller.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other is no longer only the buyer.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are two people whose lives cross for a few minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of these conversations will be brief. They may never develop into friendships. But their apparent lightness does not make them insignificant. When they are repeated, they create familiarity. They allow us to enter a place and recognise a voice, a look or a particular way of being welcomed.<\/span><\/p>\n

They remind us that we inhabit a shared world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Small shops provide especially favourable conditions for this to happen. The frequency of visits, the continuity of the people serving customers and the knowledge accumulated over time make it possible for a relationship to move, little by little, beyond the transaction itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the encounter is not the exclusive preserve of businesses of a particular size.<\/span><\/p>\n

It can also happen in a large retail chain when someone takes a genuine interest in what we need, gives us enough time or solves a problem with humanity. Closeness does not depend only on the commercial structure. It also depends on the culture of the company and the freedom it gives its employees to pay attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some organisations make encounters possible. Others turn them into an exception.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology, for its part, has brought us speed, convenience and extraordinary possibilities. It allows us to shop without travelling, compare options, find information and gain access to products that were once beyond our reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not need to choose between technology and presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to understand what each can offer us.<\/span><\/p>\n

A screen can bring what is far away closer and simplify many tasks. A face-to-face encounter offers other nuances: the tone of a voice, a pause, a smile, a look, the feeling that someone has understood something we had barely known how to express.<\/span><\/p>\n

Retail is one of the everyday spaces where these relationships can still arise naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a shop, we come across people who do not necessarily belong to our closest circle. For a few minutes, we share a place, a wait, a conversation or a recommendation. These are modest ties, but they help to weave the invisible fabric that turns a group of individuals into a community.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the purchase, another very simple gesture takes place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Something passes from one pair of hands to another.<\/span><\/p>\n

The paper bag takes part in that moment. It holds the product, but it also makes the act of handing it over visible. It leaves the shop with the customer, travels down the street and arrives at their home. Along the way, it retains the name, the identity and, in a sense, the memory of the place from which it came.<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not replace the encounter.<\/span><\/p>\n

It extends it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our modern village is no longer surrounded by walls, nor does it have clearly defined boundaries. It is made up of the places we frequent, the faces we recognise and the small routines that make us feel part of something.<\/span><\/p>\n

Preserving the encounter within retail does not mean opposing progress. It means ensuring that progress continues to make room for people.<\/span><\/p>\n

A purchase meets a need.<\/span><\/p>\n
